Federal Pell Grant Program- What is Pell Grants?
Pell Grant award amounts can vary and are dependent upon a number of different factors, including financial need, school tuition and program duration. A student’s status as a full-time or part-time student can also have an impact. Full-time students are often awarded more money than part-time students who are in the same financial bracket and attend the same school. The maximum Pell Grant award is $5,350 for the 2009-2010 year, but can change from year to year.
Because the Pell Grant is aimed at low-income families, students must be able to demonstrate financial need to be considered for this grant. Other eligibility requirements are as follows:
Applicants must be a U.S. citizen or an eligible noncitizen.
Applicants must have a high school diploma, GED or proof that they will benefit from the program.
Applicants must be undergraduate students who have not earned a bachelor’s or a professional degree (except in the cases of post-baccalaureate students who are enrolled in approved teacher certification programs).
To apply for a Pell Grant, students must fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). This form can be found online at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov. The information students enter into the FAFSA will be used to determine eligibility for the Federal Pell Grant Program as well as award amounts
